Simple Ways To Improve Your Site
So you created a site and it looks great and you are very happy with it but others don’t seem as impressed as you thought they would. You don’t have the money to pay someone to fix it, what can you do? Here are some simple tips.
Balance
Balance the graphics with the text make sure they blend well. Balance will not only make your page more visually appealing, but it will make your page easier to read and items easier to find. A good layout will help the objects on your page to flow.
Simplicity
Keep your pages simple. Remove everything that is unnecessary. That will make it possible for the important things to stand out. Don’t cram all the content onto the first page. Create a nice navagation bar. You can have as many pages as you want. Clean and simple makes a site that is easy for users to navigate.
Fonts
Fonts are very important. Choose a font that is visualy appealing and easy to read. The size is also a factor. Your font size should be no smaller than 10 points and no larger than 14 points. You want your users to be able to read it comfortably.
Backgrounds
Don’t clutter up your backgrounds with alot of graphics and textures it will take away the appeal of the site. Its distracting and the more you add the more you take away from the text and the other graphics on the page. If you choose to use a colored background make sure you choose one that complimets the other colors on the page.
Graphics
Don’t over do it with graphics. You don’t need alot and the saying less is more is actually true.
Your logo is how people recognise you and your company its your brand.
Navigation bar lets visitors navigate your site more easily. If you want you can use navigation icons.
Make your content easy to read by breaking up blocks of text into short paragraphs.
Use only two fonts one for headings and another for the text.
Don’t use bright colors to highlight key words or phrases they will stick out and make your page look unprofessional.
One think I hate is having to scroll. Never, never, never use horizontal scrolling. Don’t add text blocks with scrolls either if you need more room put something like more….. and make it a link to another page. Keep your most important information on the top of the page, if the user doesnt scroll he won’t miss the most important points.
Make sure your pages loads fast. Nothing worse than going to a site and having to wait for it to open. Don’t load your page with flash, users with slower connections will have to wait for the page to open and they may leave rather than wait.
I hope you find these tips helpful.
